Description

On verso:
This picture furnishes ample scope for the imagination to fill in the details—a letter, and perhaps a love letter. These young girls are representatives of the higher class of Cuban society. They have chosen this charming bower of tropical plants as a fitting place in which to read the thrilling words of the young lieutenant whose gallant manners and military bearing are so well remembered by them. The young officer has not forgotten the many courtesies received from the lovely Cuban friends, and from his quarters in Washington sends a letter to the far-off isles. The letter may be addressed to all of the young women, but while two only see the written page, the third reads “between the lines” the old but ever new story which may soon be repeated to her.
