United States Capitol (Washington, D.C.)
Description
On verso:
(29)
The Capitol at Washington ranks among the noblest architectural objects in the world. It is distinguished for its commanding situation and its majestic proportions, for the dignity and grace of its design, and the adornments and decorations within and without.
It consists of a main or central building (from which springs the dome) and two extensions, north and south, connected with the central building by corridors. The Rotunda, the Supreme Court Room, and the National Statuary Hall are in the central building. The north extension contains the Senate Chamber, and the south extension, the Half of Representatives. The central building is constructed of Virginia sandstone, painted white: the extensions are of Massachusetts marble. The twenty-four columns of the grand central portico are monoliths of Virginia sandstone, thirty feet high; the one hundred columns of the extension porticoes are monoliths of Maryland marble. The entire length of the Capitol is 751 feet; width. 350 feet; area, over three and a half acres. The corner stone of the main building was laid by Washington. Sent. 18, 1793. βThe crowning glory of the Capitol is the imposing dome, springing from a peristyle of fluted Corinthian columns above the central building and terminating in a lantern, which is surmounted by the Statue of Freedom, towering 307 1-2 feet above the esplanade.β
