Description

On verso:
No. 206. PONTE DEL SOSPRI OR BRIDGE OF SIGHS, VENICE, ITALY.
One of the most interesting relics of old Venice is the “Bridge of Sighs“, so called because it connects the old ducal palace with the prisons. Venitian history is full of intrigues, treachery and acts of violence. Whoever had the misfortune of displeasing the Doge or one of his favorites, was seized and under some pretense condemned to perish under the leaden roofs of the prison, to which the bridge leads, the entrance to which might well have borne the inscription over the entrance to Dante’s ‘‘Inferno”: “Leave all hope behind, ye that enter here!” The bridge spans the Canal Della Paglia, is 32 feet above the water and was built in 1597.
