Description

On verso:
No. 233. DOWN THE GRAND DRAWING ROOM, GOVERNOR’S WINTER PALACE, CITY OF
ALGIERS, ALGERIA.
As capital of the French Colony Algeria, the city of Algiers is the seat of the General Gouverneur, whose splendid winter palace is located on Bruce Place, not far from the Place de Gouvernement. The city has gained materially under French rule. There are over 270,000 colonists of French origin in Algeria, and nearly s many natives of Spain and Italy. The colony contains about 4,500,000 people, and the trade with Prance and other countries has greatly increased, but the administration is still a costly yearly burden to France. Algeria exports annually about 750,000 gallons of wine and 1,500,000 hundred weights of a superior grade of wheat, such as the Italians require for their finest maccaroni and spaghetti.
The city of Algiers contains twenty-two mosques, several catholic churches, two or three protestant churches and as many synagogues. The population amounts to 100,000, many of whom came here to recover their health in the salubrious climate.
