No. 235. GOLDEN PAVILION ON'THE LAKE AT KINKAKUJI, NEAR KYOTO, JAPAN.
Kyoto, or Kioto, is one of the three Fu cities of Japan, and was the capital of the country from 794 until 1868, when the shogunate was abolished and the Mikado and his court removed to Yeddo (Tokio.) Kyoto stands on the island of Hondo, in a fertile plain, bordered on three sides by mountains of moderate height. It is the center of many art industries, and satsuma and other ware is brought here to be decorated. There are 93 Shinto and 950 Buddhist temples in the city. The population is about 360,000. In the northeastern part of the city is the wooden imperial palace, which with its fine gardens covers twenty-six acres. Nearby is the former castle of the Shogun, now the seat of the city government.
The city is surrounded by a beautiful country, well cultivated and rich in quaint buildings peculiar to Japan. Among these the golden pavilion on the lake of Kinkakuji is one of the most admired by natives and foreigners alike.
