Description

On verso:
No. 278. DOME OF ST. PETER’S, ROME, ITALY.
The body of the Apostle Peter was buried in the Vatican field near the circus of Caligula. Constantine is said to have erected the first church above his grave, an imposing structure of five aisles. This church, however, threatened to collapse in the fifteenth century and Pope Nicholas had it torn down to make room for a new one. The plans were changed several times. Julius II accepted those of Bramante, which substantially have been carried out. His is the idea of the enormous central dome, 404 feet high inside, with a diameter of 137 feet. The cornerstone was laid in 1506.
After Bramante’s death, building operations lagged and at times stopped entirely. Successive architects altered the plans, but Michael Angelo, in 1546, returned to Bramante’s original idea and made the drawings after which the dome, a marvel of architectural skill, was executed by his successors. The cathedral cost 850,000,000 to build, and its maintenance causes an expense of 8-10,000 a year. The interior has the form of a Latin cross, with chapels on the sides. Its vastness is not realized until the colossal size of the statuary is recognized through comparison with the moving figures of people.
