AVENUES, MONTE CARLO.
Monaco is the smallest independent European principality, having an area of eight square miles and a population of about 15,000. It borders on the Mediterranean, nine miles east of Nice. There are three towns in it, Monaco, Condamine and Monte Carlo. The principality was conferred on a prince of the house of Grimaldi by Emperor Otho I, in the tenth century. A branch line of this family still continues to rule.
All the government and municipal expenses of this unique principality are defrayed by the “Association of the Watering Place and Strangers’ Club of Monaco,” which runs the Casino, the greatest and most fashionable gambling place in the world. The contract between this company and the prince expires in 1913. The principal games played are roulette and trente-et-quarante. The inhabitants of the principality are not allowed to gamble.
Monte Carlo is noted for its scenic surroundings, its mild and beautiful climate and its attractive appointments of perfect roads, magnificent promenades and elegant residences.
