Description

On verso:
No. 300. TOPPON FALLS, TROLLHATTAN, SWEDEN.
The Toppon Falls are the second in a series of five cascades, in which the waters of the river Gota-Elf descend 100 feet, and constitute one of the many beautiful sights of Sweden. The five falls are all within a space of less than a mile. The river is hemmed in at these places by rocks and rushes along at a tremendous speed. The water power, estimated at 225,000 horse power, is utilized for driving numerous mills, and a project is being carried out of using it electrically. A canal with nineteen locks, constructed at great cost, parallels the river, and enables, in connection with the Gota-Elf Canal, navigation from the German ocean (Kattegat) through the Wener, Wetter, Hjalmar and Malar Lakes to Stockholm, thus avoiding the long circuitous route around the southern peninsula of Sweden. This waterway is 240 miles long and opens up the most fertile and prosperous part of Sweden.
