Description
On verso:
No. 252. JUMPING TO STAND ROCK, DELLS OF WISCONSIN.
What a sweet, virgin witchery there is about the Wisconsin Dells! It puts the hand of enchantment upon you the moment you leave the train at Kilbourn City and does not give you free until you have explored the remotest cavern. Creatures hopelessly commonplace and garrulous, who would babble of petty personalities in the presence of a soul stirring tragedy, have been so awed and charmed by the marvelous picturesqueness of the Dells that their tongues were hushed and their minds lifted to the height of momentary forgetfulness, to a mood of noble sympathy with their sublime surroundings.
Throughout the Dells the ever varying aspect of rocks and cliffs and their delicate draperies of ferns, vines and mosses charms the spectator; the endless panorama of slender towers and stately monoliths, of massive buttresses and frowning bastions dazzles the eye and outstrips the imagination. Each turn of the glassy stream brings a new, glad surprise.
Stand Rock, a rectangular platform of stone held high above the water on the tip of a slender pillar is a wonderful sight, and many an athlete has been tempted to perform the feat of leaping onto it from the neighboring ledge.
