Description

On verso:
No 215. MOUNT ST. SALVATORE AND BOAT LANDING AT LUGANO, SWITZERLAND.
The Lake of Lugano, partly in Switzerland and partly in Italy, discharges its waters into Lake Maggiore. It is of very irregular shape, with long branches reaching in between the spurs of the Alps, and very deep. It covers an area of about thirty square miles, and several steamboats ply between its beautiful, rugged shores, besides any number of small pleasure craft. Lugano is an industrious Swiss city on the north shore of the lake, with an entirely Italian character and nearly 8,000 inhabitants. The city is rich in beautiful private parks surrounding magnificent modern villas. There are numerous famous points nearby, from which a splendid view is had down upon the lake, the city, northward into the Alps, and southward over the verdant plain of Lombardy. First among them is Mount St. Salvatore, nearly two miles south of Lugano, rising as a pyramid nearly 3,000 feet above the plain. A cable railway leads to the top.
