Description

On verso:
No. 216. CARL JOHAN’S GADE, FROM PALACE PARK, CHRISTIANIA, NORWAY.
Carl Johan’s Gade is one of the principal thoroughfares of the capital of Norway. The street extends from the Palace Park in the center of the city to the principal railway station. At the left are seen the buildings of the University of Christiania, at the right are the grounds surrounding the national theater with the statue of Ibsen. Beyond these grounds is Eidsvold’s Square, a noble place, which stamps the city as a metropolis of considerable pretensions. The building of the “Storthing” or House of Representatives, and other government buildings, sixteen Lutheran churches, one Episcopal, two Methodist and two Catholic churches are real ornaments to the well kept city. Christiania is the most important port of the country, and takes the lead in industry. Since Norway has been separated from Sweden, Christiania bids fair to grow still more rapidly than it has done of late, increasing its population from 65,000 in 1865 to 235,000 in 1904.
