Description

On verso:
No. 217. A COUNTRY MARKET SCENE, ISLAND OF JAVA.
The tropical climate of Java, aided by a volcanic soil and an abundance of rain, produces an astonishing fertility, and the vegetation, diversified by the varied altitudes, ranges from the cocoanut tree on the coast to the moss of the temperate zone on the mountain tops, that at times are covered with ice. On the terraces of the mountain sides every vegetable and fruit can be grown. Vast fields of rice yield three harvests a year. Figs, tea, coffee, bamboo, camphor trees grow at an altitude of 2,000 to 4,000 feet. Further up vast forests of teak and mahogany trees grow wild, but are under government supervision to prevent waste. About three quarters of all the land is claimed by the government.
Java is densely populated. Of the 29,000,000 inhabitants about 45.000 are Europeans, 250,000 Chinese, 15,000 Arabs and 4,000 Hindoos. The natives are of the Malayan race, the Sundese in the western end of the island and the Javanese in the eastern. They are patient and easily led when convinced that nothing contrary to their religion is demanded of them. Their religion is a mixture of Mohammedanism and ancient Buddhistic notions. An insult a Javanese is quick to avenge with his kris.
