Description
On verso:
No. 230. MINERVA TERRACE. MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS HOTEL IN DISTANCE, YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK.
Mammoth Hot Springs, the first point in the tour of the park, is the administrative center of this wonderland. It is a very attractive place. A large green lawn is flanked on the east by the buildings of Fort Yellowstone On the opposite side rises Terrace Mountain with the richly colored, steaming, wonderfully scupltured terraces, that are the delight of thousands of visitors. Facing the huge hotel and the government buildings, to the south and bounding the plain, rises Lookout Hill. A battery of cannon salute the sunrise and sunset every morning and evening.
Seventy non-eruptive hot springs are at work here, slowly but surely building up these basins and terraces of yellow and red calcareous sinter or travertine. How long may it have taken these silent forces to erect this mighty cone, several hundred feet high, of semicircular, beautifully scalloped basins, ornamented with natural beadwork? The water issues at a boiling temperature at the summit and cools gradually, as it descends into the successive basins below.
