Description

On verso:
No. 231. HARBOR, COAST AND CASTLE HILL, FROM BOUL, CARNOT, NICE, FRANCE.
The situation of Nice is exceedingly charming. It was built on a cluster of hills that rise one above the other, surrounded by vineyards and orange and lemon orchards. This most beautiful spot is sheltered from the rough north winds by the near Alps, so that even in winter the temperature rarely sinks below the freezing point. The population of 110,000 is increased during the winter by 20,000 foreigners who come here to spend the cold season. As they are almost exclusively rich people, Nice is one of the gayest and most expensive places of the world. The fashionable season begins about New Year and lasts till June 1. Along the shore extends a fine boulevard, at the end of which rises Castle Hill to a height of 320 feet, with the ruins of an old castle, and beautiful promenades. The center of the fashionable life is the Square Massena, with a bronze statue of Massena, one of Napoleon’s marshals, who was born here. Near this square is the splendid Casino with the public garden, reaching to the sea, and terminating in an iron and glass pier promenade.
