Description

No. 243. FEEDING THE PIGEONS, PIAZZA SAN MARCO, VENICE, ITALY.
Situated on 120 islands in a shallow bay of the Adriatic Sea, near the mouths of the Adige and Po, Venice has about 175 narrow canals spanned by 378 bridges. These canals take the place of streets in Venice, but there are numerous narrow lanes between the houses and nearly 200 small open squares. The chief square is the Piazza San Marco. It is nearly 500 feet long and half as wide, and is surrounded by historic palaces with arcades. The Cathedral of San Mark faces it. This splendid edifice was named after the Evangelist St. Mark, the patron saint of the republic, whose bones are said to have been brought here from Alexandria, Egypt, in 829. In front of the cathedral stand the three bronze pedestals for flagstaff's visible in the picture. They were erected in 1505. The Piazza San Marco is the center of the public life of the city and the meeting place of all the travelers.
