Description

On verso:
No. 244. NIKKO, JAPAN. SHADED STREET AND STAIRWAY APPROACH TO THE
MAUSOLEUM OF IYEYASU.
Famous for its natural beauties as well as for the mortuary shrines of Iyeyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa family, Nikko occupies the position of a greatly favored tourist resort. As a holy place its reputation dates from the eighth century, but the gorgeous shrines were not built until 1617, since which time their beauty and riches have been constantly increased by the lavish gifts of vassals in works of art in bronze, granite, wood carving and precious stones. The Dutch and the Koreans also have contributed rich offerings. Nikko is a town in the prefecture of Tochigi, about eighty miles northwest of Tokio.
