Description

On verso:
No. 249. CATHEDRAL AND LEANING TOWER OF PISA, ITALY.
The Cathedral of Pisa was built of dazzling white marble in 1603 to commemorate a naval victory of the republic. It contains the spoils of many wars within its five naves, separated by Greek and Roman colums of great beauty. The gilded dome towering above the roof of the cathedral is the crowning glory of the marble baptistery, built 1153 to 1278, a great rotunda 190 feet high, in which there is an exquisite fountain executed by Guido Bigarelli in 1246. The Leaning Tower is a bell tower or “campanile.” It was finished in 1350. Its deviation from the perpendicular is probably due to an earthquake during its construction. There is no reason to believe that the architect planned to give the tower its peculiar pose, while the upper galleries show attempts to counterbalance the effect of the leaning.
