No. 250. THE POLICE STATION, HONG KONG, CHINA.
Hong Kong, a city of about 300,000 inhabitants, is situated on an island near the estuary of the Canton River, 90 miles south of Canton, separated from the mainland by the narrow Lyemum Strait. The island is about 10 miles long, 7 1/2 miles broad and a rocky formation, Victoria Peak rising to 1809 feet. It has good water and a profuse flora, although few trees. There is a large trade with England and Germany, cotton being the principal article imported, while tea, silk and hemp are exported. The colony’s prosperity is largely due to the presence of large numbers of Chinese merchants and tradesmen engaged in working building stone, one of the island’s principal products. Hong Kong was ceded to Great Britain in 1842; some 376 square miles on the mainland opposite with 100,000 inhabitants were leased in 1898, and form together with the island a British crown colony and naval station.
