Description
On verso:
No. 254. YOKOHAMA, JAPAN. THREE LITTLE MAIDS ARE WE. AT THE CHRYS-
ANTHEMUM SHOW.
Though industrious, the Japanese are eminently a social and pleasure-seeking people, fond of feasts and shows, and they have frequent national holidays. The ladies of the upper classes spend much of their time in the fabrication of pretty boxes, artificial flowers and purses, and in the painting of fans and pictures of birds and animals. They keep their hair very long, and usually wear on their heads numerous costly ornaments of tortoise shell. Their dress very much resembles that of the men, and consists of a number of loose, wide gowns worn over each other, with the family coat-of-arms woven or worked into the back and front of the outer garment, and all fastened at the waist by a girdle. The women usually wear brighter colors than the men. Within doors socks are the only covering of the feet.
The vegetation of Japan is exceedingly varied, the products of the tropics being intermingled with those of the temperate zone. The chrysanthemum is a common and favorite plant, and has become an emblem of Japan.
