Description

On verso:
No, 255. GROUP OF CHILDREN IN NARROW STREET, CITY OF ALGIERS, ALGERIA.
The Boulevard of the Republic, a magnificent terrace 2,000 yards long, resting on a double row of arches, 350 in number that are used for shops and stores, is the central point of the public life of the European part of the population of Algiers. High above looms the “Kasba,” the old Moorish fort, now serving as a barracks, and between these two points lies the irregular mass of terraces and steeply ascending narrow lanes of the old part of the city. No wagons can pass these lanes. The houses are built close together to exclude every ray of the sun ; the lanes are slightly depressed in the middle to carry off the rain water. These narrow passages swarm with children, among whom all the types of the human race may be found.
