Description

On verso:
No. 259. CASINO AND GROUNDS, FUNCHAL, MADEIRA ISLAND.
Funchal is situated on the south side of the Island of Madeira, near the coast of Northwest Africa. It is the port of the group of islands. The exports consist of wine, onions, sweet potatoes and sugar. The city has 20,000 inhabitants, is irregularly built, with narrow, winding, ill paved, dirty streets. The population is mixed, English, French, Portuguese, Negro and Mulatto. Funchal is the seat of the Portuguese governor and a bishop. A former Franciscan convent has a chapel in one wall of which 3,000 human skulls are worked in The climate of the islands is perfect, and people with diseases of the lungs come here in large numbers to seek recovery. Hundreds of them are daily seen in the beautiful grounds of the Casino.
The European steamers that sail to and from the Cape of Good Hope or beyond, stop here regularly, so that the island has excellent communication with the outside world.
