Description
On verso:
No. 260. CLOISTER AND STATUE OF CHRIST, CAMPO SANTO, GENOA, ITALY.
In a wide half circle the city of Genoa rises ampitheatrically on the steep sides of the Ligurian Appennines, looking down upon a splendid basin, its port, the lively activity in which reminds one of the great days when the dukes of Genoa were supreme masters of the Mediterranean Sea. Witnesses of these days of glory are the numerous palaces named after the great families who reigned here, and partly still in the possession of their descendants. Among the 82 churches of Genoa there are some built in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. One of the many interesting sights of the city is the Cimitero di Staglione, popularly called “Campo Santo” (holy field). It is located at a distance of about two miles from the city, in the valley of the Bisagno river, containing a vast number of beautiful monuments of pure white marble, and a rotunda, the inner gallery of which is supported by enormous monoliths of black marble.
