Description
On verso:
No. 280. MOORISH BUILDING NEAR GOVERNMENT PALACE, CITY OF ALGIERS,
ALGERIA.
In the Koran are found the following words: “O true believers, surely wine, lots and images are an abomination and the work of Satan; therefore avoid ye them, that ye may prosper.” Mohammed’s attitude toward art was occasioned by his scruples against any representation that might serve as an object of worship, and his followers obey him strictly. The effect of this peculiarity upon the development of the Arabian mind has been very pronounced. Shut out from the study of the animal body and of the plant, the Arabic artist turned to fantastic lines and to color in mural decorations, as well as in woven goods and glassware. The architecture of Mohammedan buildings is always highly picturesque. Note the scroll like towers flanking the entrance in the picture and the rich effect of the red and, yellow panels set off by a pure white frame. Seen from the harbor, the Mohammedan part of Algiers, situated high above the European quarter, represents a very attractive view in its snowy whiteness.
