Description
On verso:
No. 281. GEN. GRANT’S TOMB, RIVERSIDE DRIVE, NEW YORK.
Stately Riverside Drive, skirting the hills fronting on the Hudson from 72nd to 127th streets, New York City, is one of the most striking roads that any city can boast of. It affords beautiful views of the river and has become one of the most attractive residential quarters of the metropolis. On Claremont Heights, near the north end of the drive, is the tomb of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, a huge and massive mausoleum of white granite, erected from 1891 to 1897, at a cost of 8600,000. It consists of a lower story in the Doric style, 90 feet square, surmounted by a cupola, borne by Ionic columns. The 'total height is 150 feet. The interior is arranged, analogous to that of Napoleon’s tomb at 1|he Hotel des Invalides in Paris, and has a highly impressive effect. The red porphyry sarcophagus containing the body of General Grant is placed in an open crypt below the center of the dome. By its side is a similar sarcophagus containing the remains of the general’s wife.
