Description
No. 289. FOREST PARK, ST. LOUIS. PAVILION REFLECTED IN LAKE.
On the west side of the city of St. Louis, four and one-half miles from the court house, is Forest Park, the largest in the city, with an area of 1,370 acres. It has fine trees and drives, but a great many of the trees were cut-down for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, which occupied half the area of the park. The muddy River des Peres meanders through the park, which also contains several lakes, on the border of one of which stands the Pavilion represented in our picture. Its airy elegance is very impressive, and its style is an excellent adaptation of the best Moorish models.
The city of St. Louis has eighteen public parks, of which four are quite large. These four, Forest, O’Fallon, Tower Grove and Carondelet, are being connected by a system of boulevards carried across Mill Creek Valley on a magnificent viaduct.
