Description
On verso:
No. 290. ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL, INTERIOR VIEW, ROME, ITALY.
One of the oldest churches in Rome, Italy, is St. Paul’s Cathedral, or “San Paolo fuore di Mura,” erected on the spot where St. Paul suffered martyrdom, or, according to others, where he lies buried. At the end of the fourth century the church was at great cost and in magnificent style renovated by the Emperors Theodosius and Honorius. In the year 1823 a conflagration almost destroyed the central nave of this so called Basilica of Honorius, but it has been rebuilt at large expense and is a beautiful specimen of “Old Christian” art. The aisles and the apsis contain highly interesting mosaics of the thirteenth century. The cathedral is one of the seven basilicas which for centuries have been visited by every pilgrim that comes to Rome.
