Description

No. 291. GATEWAY ROCKS, GARDEN OF THE GODS, COLORADO.
Colorado is the foremost state in the Union, except Pennsylvania, in mineral resources, and by far the first in all except iron and coal. The Cretacious rocks hold great coal deposits, and the volcanic upthrows have left enormous deposits of the precious and other metals. The production of gold is relatively steady and tends to increase; that of silver is subject to fluctuations, and many mines have shut down. The greatest output of silver was in 1892, just before the repeal of the Sherman Act. About one-fourth of all the lead produced in the country is mined in Colorado. Also zinc and manganiferous iron are produced in large quantities.
The dry, cool, thin air of mountainous Colorado makes its accessible portions, especially the “parks”, widely famed as sanitariums for patients with asthmatic or pulmonary diseases. The summer days are sometimes hot, but the dry air and bare rocks cause so rapid a radiation that the nights are cool and dewless. There is little severe winter, zero weather being rare.
